Land of wine and Cava, Catalonia has a distinguished tradition of winemaking. Throughout the years, it has proved to be a dynamic wine-producing area, promoting the reform of the Spanish wine industry, by introducing international grape varieties and modern viticultural techniques. Given the versatility of its wine styles, Catalonia is often regarded as distinct from the other wine-growing regions in Spain. Even though being relatively small, thanks to the tremendous diversity of landscapes, microclimates, soil types and grape varieties, twelve different Designations of Origin (D.O.) can be found in Catalonia. The majority of the Catalan wine production is under a D.O. providing the added value in relation to traceability guarantee and national and international quality standards fulfillment.
